ok here's the thing, I have another Bayou problem!! what joy!! Well here's the problem. Lately it has been on the slow side, I put some carb cleaner in it and that helped quite a bit but now it's slowed back down again. When I'm out on the trail I'll be riding and it'll want to keep slowing down on a straight away. So of course I give it more throttle but it just wants to keep slowing down on me. Another problem is that when I take the throttle and push it down to 1/2-full really fast it likes to die on me. The temp right now is 60 degrees. When I start it it won't start with choke on, but it'll start without the choke on, but the wierd part is that if you give it any kind of throttle after you start it it'll die on you. You can't feed it any kind of throttle until about 3 minutes after it starts. It seems to idle ok right now, but that could change of course. It also doesn't like to run too smooth at a constant throttle, ( if you run it about 1/4 throttle holding it it likes to sputter and make tiny popping sounds.) If any one knows anything that I could do to improve this problem let me know. Don't bother if alls you're going to say is something like "get a Honda" because I'm seriously tired of hearing that.

I'd first make sure the fuel isn't contaminated--drain the float bowl and tank from the "Reserve" petcock. Check to see the fuel petcock and fuel lines allow the gas to flow freely.

Still got problems? Remove, disassemble, clean and adjust carburetor; check float level carefully. Make sure you have a good vacuum seal on the slide diaphragm when you reassemble the carb. If you have a starting enrichment plunger ("choke"), make sure the plunger lines up and moves freely in and out. Check the carb hoses, make sure there are no leaks or tears.

That's about all I can suggest from the symptoms you describe; good luck!

Hey thanks very much for the reply I really appreciate it. Tree Farmer what do you ride? I know you've probaby said before but I haven't been on this site for all that long (6 months maybe.) I've drained the carb float bowl and there was a lot of dirt in it and everything. The person that owned it before us probably never drained it either. But my dad won't let me go any farther maintenance wise on it so I don't know what to do now. And he also won't take it in because he says there's nothing wrong with it. It's over 8 years old and it never even has had a valve adjustment yet, even though there's a loud ticking in the top of it right where the exhaust valve is. He also thinks the oil only needs to be changed once a year (shows how much he knows) But I change it every 5 tanks of gas anyways. I don't know what I should do with the machine. Let it go to hell or what. Hehe. Well thanks again.

Well I found the problem, what it was is that the breather tube on the gas tank cap was plugged a little bit, go figure it was something as simple as that and now it runs better. Thanks for your help anyways everyone.

220, Glad you found your problem! If you found a lot of dirt in the carb bowl, though, you really should pull & clean the gas tank, including the fuel valve. If you can't do that, install an inline fuel filter between the fuel valve & the carb. They only cost a couple bucks & can save some real headaches. Good luck!
P.S. I have a service manual for the Kaw 220, so if you need any info, just Email me direct.
