97 Prairie 400 engine
#4
Hello Uinthas,
Let me give you a little background info on what's happening. First the engine itself (piston, rings, performance) is in great shape, plenty of power, no smoke etc. The problem is with the drive mechanism in the engine, not in the tranny. I've had the bike completely disassembled, checked all the tranny and drive train parts to find nothing wrong, not broken or even appear to have any wear other than the sleeve bearing on the torque converter, which I replaced and put the bike back together, but it didn't correct the problem. I even took the engine to the pro shop for their inspection before I put it back together ( I only went into the tranny side of the engine).
The problem I'm having is that when under high torque, you full throttle from a dead stop or trek thru deep mud the engine makes a sound like gears are stripping. My dear son who has a Suzuki LT 230 ( which is clutch/manual shifting) jumped on my bike to move it about 6 months ago and revved the engine and shoved it into gear making a grinding sound, at first it didn't seem like it hurt the bike, but after putting it under high torque I found out differently. Now the only thing I can think is wrong is one of the two shafts that are driven by the power side of the engine has been damaged.
I'm just looking to see if I have any other options besides tearing the engine apart again. That's probably what I'll be doing though.

Thanks, I'm searching ebay, atv trader online, monkey ads or wherever there may be a possibility of finding what I need. I just thought soemone may be able to provide some info, have a neighbor or friend that might have one parked and would like to get rid of it. I'm not finding much out there right.

It sounds like your on top of things. Just a thought, Do you think it might be something simple like the linkage is out of adjustment. If it is it might not be letting it go fully into gear. When you put it under a load it kind of spits it back out. I know it sounds to simple but I have seen it happen. Just something to check before you spend more money.

My son's 97 Prairie did the same thing as yours. Sounded like the trannie gears were stripping, when you got on the gas. It was the front bevel gear, which drives both the front and the rear drive shafts. Don't know if the spring was weak or not, but he bought another bevel case and it had a spacer in it which would not let the gear back off. This spacer replaces the spring. Hope this helps you some. No, he bought a used one. Did you find that was your problem also. I don't know if the spring get's weak or not, but it was replaced with a bushing or spacer, so the gear would not back off, making the grinding noise. NorminN.B.
