I asked the forum basically this same question recently, and concluded from the posters' comments that cutting into the wiring harness to install the dg module may bring problems with Kawasaki invalidating the warranty.
With the CDI, you just take out the stock CDI and put in Dynatek's, plug and play. If you need to take it back to the dealer, just swap your original back in the machine. I do not see this as unethical as the machine runs better with the dyna.
The only reason not to just go with the Dyna and be done with it, is that the CDI is more expensive than the dg. There are 4 different CDI's for the Prairies, BF, so make sure of what you are ordering (it's easy).
I'm a little confused if I helped you or not.....ask the forum again if I didn't get your question.

My 2004 Prairie 700 just blew a CDI. I take it easy on the machine, only putting 924 miles in 122 hours on it. I can't believe something like that can cost so much, $400 - $450 I was quoted. Unfortunately the warrantee expired in December so I'm stuck with the bill, I guess. The only thing it seems to be effecting is the Belt light is staying on so until I can get an aftermarket one I'll just get used to the light being on.
Is this a common problem with these machines and if so, maybe Kawi is making a faulty product.

The BF 650 is the same as the '03 P650 except for the plastic from what I have read. Therefore, I would think you need the CDI designed for the '03 P650. That CDI is also the same as what I have ordered for my '05 P700. Scott at Dynatek confirmed that I should order a DFS2-13 for my '05 P700. Here are the different CDI's from Dynatek's web page:
DFS2-11P 2003-2004 KFX400 Kawasaki Quad (Programmable ; $433)
DFS2-12 2001-2002 Kawasaki P650 (This one + the CDI's listed below are $248 + $7 shipping = $255)
DFS2-13 2003-2004 Kawasaki Prairie 650/700 (Scott told me this was also for the '05 Prairie)
DFS2-14 2003-2004 Kawasaki KFX700/V Force
DFS2-15 2005 Brute Force (I'm thinking this is for the BF 750 only)
You won't waste your $250 if the DFS2-13 doesn't work with your BF650; Dynatek will refund your money from everything I've read. I'm pretty sure you want the DFS2-13 for your BF 650.
alltoys: I hope the above is what you were talking about.
wyowilderness: Yours is the first stock CDI failure I have heard of, so I don't believe that it is a common failure on the Prairies. You can get Dynatek's DFS2-13 for a lot less than $400-$450 ($248), and it will bring the timing much closer to where it should be. You should be able to feel more power as soon as you stick it in there (5 minute job). I know I did on my '02 P650; I did have to adjust the idle speed down with the adjustment **** on the right side.
Every once in awhile Dynatek sends out a bad one, but they make it good. Just aggravating is all. A few of the originals caused kick-back on the starter, but they have solved that from what I hear.

kawiyowee, thanks for the info. I'll give Scott at Dynatek a call to see if any adjustments need to be made for high altitude. My house is at nearly 8,000 feet and I go up from here.
