Went and looked at a KFX400 today...

No test drives where I'm from either. Especially the sport bikes.
I got my KFX for $5200 plus tax and title and such, it was just around 5700 out the door with no money down. Although I got a good deal since I stumbled into a huge sale.
Either way I never rode one until I brought it home. I sat on it and got a feel for the machine to see if I was comfortable but that was it. I knew the engine had enough power and I knew the suspension would be good it was all a matter of comfort. However they did say that AFTER your credit is approved and the deal was done you could test drive right there. Problem is with that is if you crash it, ding it, dent it or anything you buy it anyway.
My suggestion is that if you don't have a place to ride a sport bike don't get one. There is quite a massive performance difference between an Eiger and a z400. A lot of guys make the mistake of picking the "cool" looking sport machine only to find they can't handle the power and type of skill required to make them go into places where 4x4s should tread.
You have to approach trails and things totally differently on a sport machine than you do a 4x4. You don't "crawl" over a tree crossing on a sport quad, you don't crawl up big hills, you don't crawl over and up creek crossings. You hit things hard and you use speed and momentum and skill to get over them.
Ideally having BOTH would be great since 4x4s are great for blazing trails. But it all depends on your skill level and what terrain you have to ride in.

Thanks for the replies guys. I actually ended up getting a used 01 Blaster for $1700. I figure that would be a great machine to start out on and when I need more power, I'll give this one to my finace and pick up one with more power. Ahh, yes, and the hill I was worried about I ended up getting up it no big deal, so I was surprised. The hill is a monster...but it was 90 degrees out this weekend with no moisture, so we'll see when it gets slick.
