Default HELP!! Drive Pulley Sucka won't come off

Bought Pulley Puller today 1st time trying to remove pulley. Before I removed belt by Driven Pulley and turned bolt and rode over pulley, don't want to do that anymore because possible damage to belt(stretch belt etc.)So I broke down and bought puller. Removed pulley bolt and inserted puller also removed recoil starter, because I have a spanner wrench. I tighten as hard as I could and the pulley would'nt come off. I evan went to NYROC's Tech Tips and still won't come off. Even use a breaker bar on puller nothing. The only thing I have'nt tried is heating the metal parts, I really don't want to do that because I don't want to warp or crack anything,as you all know there's alot of aluminum around the casing and I don't want to crack that, then I'll really will be eating a poop sandwich. I think the pulley has never been removed before ,I'm at a loss as to what to to do. ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated. Believe me when I tell you I used all of my weight (6'0" 230lbs) to try to get that F***ER off. Thanx Guy's

Default HELP!! Drive Pulley Sucka won't come off

I heard of a few people having problems, what I think they do is tighten it up then give it a good rap with a hammer on the end of the puller bolt.

Impact gun. I've taken off 2 now and they both popped right off with a 1/2 inch impact. Al1 has a good idea too.

Air Impact gun, and maybe, a good rap on the center bolt of the puller should do it.

Got up this morning tried again, Oh! by way I do have an 1/2" impact 250ft lbs didn't work, also tried with a 8lb sledge noway Man What the heck. Let me get this straight you take off pulley bolt insert pulley puller bolt turn clockwise on tight right then it shoud pop off. I even used spanner wrench on recoil starter.NOTHING I'm PISSED

Another idea. Crank up the torque on the puller bolt with an impact gun. Get a piece of 3/4" or 1" brass roundbar about 10" long. Put it between the sheaves on the drive pulley so that one end of the roundbar is sitting flat on the steel shaft of the clutch. Give it a smack with a hammer. Don't worry about damaging the shaft as the brass is way softer than the steel of the shaft. Might stretch the steel of the clutch shaft just enough to pop it loose. Make sure the brass roundbar isn't contacting the aluminum sheave as it might damage it when you smack it.

Might also try liquid wrench or penetrant in the puller bolt hole & rear of sheeve if you can get the straw/liquid wrench to the Crankshaft & let it sit overnight. Give it a rap with a ball peen hammer on the puller bolt head the next day. The crankShaft is tapered like a boat propeller shaft and the Primary clutch sits on the crankshaft shaft like a thrust washer does on your boat propeller shaft. It sometimes rusts in place from water/mud getting in the CVT. Just need to break rust loose and primary should pop off.

Let's make sure that we are on the same page. You are removing the PRIMARY(frt.) clutch, right? You got the big boltloose, that holds the clutch to the crankshaft, right.? You are NOW trying to "pop" the clutch off the end of the crank taper. Try putting some tension on the puller's center bolt, then lightly rapping the bolt. Do NOT use that 8lb sledge, unless you want to buy a motor. That SHOULD have dislodged it. If you can't do any good, I would STRONGLY suggest that you take it to a service shop.

Only problem with taking it to a shop is that they will do exactly what we are telling him to do on this forum. If they can't get it off, they won't risk busting it as they don't wanna buy a new one. Penetrant is another good idea. Like TRX said, don't get carried away with a sledge hammer!! You'll bugger something bad with that!

One guy on another forum busted his clutch trying to get it off. Be careful no matter what you do.
