Kawasaki Bayou 185 Rebuild
Im rebuilding my 185 and need some help. Ive started the teardown by removing the front fender storage ben , ive pulled the plate off the side of the head where the cam gear is this is all that is holding me up from removing the head. Is the gear reverse threads? What procedure do I need to follow I know to take a piece of wire and tie the chain up so that it doesnt jump time? Anybody know where to buy a new head for this atv, rings etc?

I took the tensioner out and slipped the chain off, since I couldn't get the gear off. Do you have a service manual? It is very helpful. I got mine from Repairmanual.com. The head is off mine now and I am debating wheather I should drop the money for a new piston, since my intake valve broke off and damaged the piston somewhat, and ruined the head. I got mine used for $200, and it has a good tranny, and the reverse works.

I got mine for 300 dollars and it ran fine until I knocked the oil plug out of the bottom of it and it sat for a while and ever since then it has been smoking like a freight train. It wasn't long before the valve pulled through. It has been sitting in the yard for 3 months now and i'm getting anxtious to ride it. anyways best of luck and maybe i'll ride it before winter

Well, mine would be running if I had the money. I really should replace my piston, but I just don't have the money for it now. I figure a used head could run me upwards of $50+shipping on Ebay, and then I have to buy gaskets, and a new laptop is taking priority now.

I love riding mine. Really rough ride, and it vibrates a ton when on pavement at high speeds, but it has served me well. The rebuild cost me $100 total; $80 for valves, and $20 for an auto machine shop to put them in the head. I put the engine back together myself. I kept my original piston, and I have probably put 300 mi on the rebuild. My fuel pump bit the dust a week ago, and I just bought another one on Ebay. It would quit when I was out in the middle of the woods, and I would have to be towed back. I quickly learned that whacking it with something made the pump start again. But lately smoke has been coming from it, and I even took the whole thing apart, and it is toast. I also put a plow on it. It is homemade and 40" wide. Nice plow. Even without tire chains, I don't slip while I plow snow. I wanted to go on the lake with it, but yesterday I couldn't get the fuel pump to work and just ended up with freezing fingers. The engine does smoke some when it is cold, but when it warms up that stops. Part of my muffler is gone, and it sounds just like my friend's '77 Honda XL175 4 stroke enduro, which has part of the muffler gone as well. It sounds really cool; a low, rumbling noise.
