GPS PURCHASE HELP PLEASE!!!!
#1
Hey guys,I want to purchase a GPS for my bike, I have done a thread search and read dozens of them but I'm still confused as to what I need. I don't want to spend more then I need but also don't want to purchase something that is not going to do what I want. I do not understand the basics of these things. I see these GPS's here at the local Walmart they are like $129.00 which is a reasonable price. I want to be able to find my way to where I'm going,I don't want just to be able to find my way home. What exactly do I need. We are going on a three day trip through some pretty wilderness country up here in Canada and I'd love to be able to have that thing with me. I guess what I'm looking for is something that will point me in the right direction or on to the right road or trail if I'm confused. Help please,My three year old has to program the vcr for me.

You must be looking at the Magellan Explorest 100.I have the 400.The 100 is a great GPS for finding your way back to where you started, but it can't download maps of where your going. That's why I got the 400.You can download up to 8mb of memory, and it already has 8mb of maps stored in it.They are very easy to use.

Doing great.
I'm out every night now scouting and tending bear baits.Seeing alot of deer around here now.Seen a 6 point moose last night.
Alot of guys like their Garmins. The explorist 100 is a great GPS,as long as you don't want to load maps.Does the Garmin have free activation?

The BEST bang for the buck is GPSMAP 76 for $200 from West Marine IMO. It used to be $400 when it first came out, then went down to $300 last year and now at $200. This one is good enough even for the pros. I use it for day-long trail riding, on my off-shore fishing boat in Pacific ocean to go to remote islands and of course on-land road trips as well. It has such detailed lake, mountain, city and street maps and names that you won't believe all those goodies for such low price. I even use it during int'l trips (not as detailed as on USA maps but definitely better than nothing than when you are in other country). Good size screens, adjustable fonts, altimeter, downloadable, waterproof, etc. Very higly recommend.

I bought a garmin etrex vista (the etrex with 24 mb memory downloadable), their metroguide map and topo map.... about 400 + 100 + 100 when I bought it in spring of last year.
I download topo maps into it of where I'm going to be. It will take most of the western slope of Colorado before it runs out of memory.
The problem I have with it, now that the screen has been in the sun so much, is that it is hard to tell my track from topo lines. I do need it to get back as my sense of direction has gone south. (I carry a map and compass too, just in case)
If you can find a way to swing it, I highly recommend a color display. It's easy to see the difference of what is a trail, a contour line, route and track lines. Garmin has some for sale, I suppose everyone probably does.
