Questions on the Prairie 300
#1
I going to look at a '99 300 4X4 this weekend. Anyone have any tips on things I should look out for? Weak points or such.
Also, what are your thoughts on this quad? What would a fair price be?

They are great bikes. Never had a problem with mine. I liked mine a lot just wanted more power thats why I went with a P700. To bad you don't live in my area I'm trying to sell my 2000 model for $3000.

My dad has a 300 prairie that stays at my house for my brother to use. This atv has over 2500 miles on it and so far we have had no trouble out of it. The only thing I do not care for is the all time four wheel drive it seems to wear the front tires out faster and I think it makes the front end road walk. All in all though a good machine for chores and hunting but dont get one if you are wanting to do doughnuts or wheelies because you will not be happy with the performance.

we have a 2000 model 300 Prairie... I will tell you they are very durable machines... I was very content with it as my quad, until dang Kawi came out ith the 650 in '02... then I passed it on to momma... she has gone on to win more small class & powder puff mud race trophies than you would believe with that quad... we plow our 1/4 mile long drive way with it, & though it's finally tired enough now, that I'll be doing a high po rebuild on it this winter, we still plan to keep it around... in fact, if I get the rebuild done, I intend to use it to race in the SRA class at the Mud Nationals this year...
weak points, & things you'll want to fix...
first...there is a little module to unhook by the battery to get it to start in gear... the shifter is really one of it's most frustrating components... push the button to go into reverse or low range ( plowing for instance requires lots of shifter finesse to continually go from low to reverse, & back to low again ), & if the quad is accidently shut of while in low or reverse, it can be a real pain to get it back to neutral to restart... unhooking the safety interlock is a piece of cake, & eliminates that problem...
second... ditch the stock steel wheels for a set of much lighter "big Prairie" or aftermarket 12" front & rear wheels & tires... our worn 300, has litterally as much power & probably more speed than the new 360's, with a set of lighter wheels & slightly smaller rear tires...
third... if you want to keep it for a while, pick up & install the Warn 424 front end disconnect... it makes the quad lots better handling & much more fun to drive...
forth... get the front end recall taken care of... the only real negitive mechanical thing I can think of is the front bearing races were slightly loose fit in the lower knuckle on some of the front ends... this results in a kind of popping sound in the front end... ( ours did this occasionally since new, & has been riddin hard, with out any resulting problems ), but it may bother some people more than others... doing the recall replaces those parts anyway, & replaces lots of the moving parts ( ball joints & bearings in the front end ), so you definately want to make sure to get the knuckle recall taken care of, if it hasn't been done already...
I think it's one of the most reliable of Kawi's quads... & would be certainly every bit as reliable as any brand of quad ( Honda ), of equal age & use...
