Praire 300 info needed
#1
I have a 2000 Praire 4x4, a great machine, no problems. I have read on this forum about disconnecting something to allow it to start in gear. yea I have forgotten to go back into neutral before turning it off and yes it is a pain to get it to neutral when not running. The start in gear feature would save a big headache !! Also, I understand there is a sight that explains how to shim the clutch sheaves at least getting them apart and back together, could someone give me that sight. Are the shims bought or made ? Thanks in advance for your help.......

Been a while since I did that mod on our 300... there is a 2 wire relay in the battery box, I don't remember ot you just unplug it, or just jumper the wires, but it was very easy to do, & one of the best mods to do... I've heard of guy's taking out the **** guts, so that the shifter just goes where ever you move it, but, even though shift from low to reverse while plowing, & back again, is a pain in the rear, I like to know that if I'm in low, that I can't accidently bump the shifter into another gear... the start in gear feature has be a great mod on our quad...
you can't put links from this site to other sites, but concerning the shims, & I've never had to do our 300's, but if it's similar to the other big Prairies, Kawi sells differnt shim thicknesses ( like 4 different thicknesses ), & a combination of them is used to achive the correct belt tension, they are fitted into the center of the secondary ( rear ) clutch... but the 300 / 400's have a different CVT set up than the 360's & other newer big Prairies, so the shims may be different part numbers, or not needed at all ??? I never did get a shop manual yet, for the 300, even though I have intended to...
BTW... I finally broke down & bought & installed the Warn 424, & it was a very worthwhile add on for the 300... greatly increased the fun factor, & improves steering & handling while in 2 X 4 mode... IMO, one of the best mods for the 300...

Many thanks for the info, but need to be a bit more specific about what relay and how, don't want to short anything out. I did some research on my brain and finally remembered the site I was looking for.
How was the installation of the 424 diconnect ? I am thinking of one myself. Have their been any problems with it, pro's or con's..
Also does it rust or have any problems with it going thru water ?

no problems... I will say that when installing it, do not disassemble the **** any more than it shows in the directions... there is a small ball thats loose & held in with grease if you disassemble it too far... it can fall out ( there aught to be a warning in the directions )... fortunately I found it sitting on the front rack... it is used to hold out the ****...
the shaft is nickle plated, & mine still looks good after about 3 months of use...I think it's built right for the use, & was very easy to install...
I'm franticly trying to get my house addition buttoned up right now, it's getting cold ( 28* this morning )... but if I remember, I'll pull the seat & see if it needed the jumper wire, or just unplugged...

I would guess that since they are nearly the same motor, it might... does the Lakota have the same auto tranny ??? or is it a manual transmission ??? either way, look for a small black 2 wire module in the battery box... if it's there, you may be in luck...

A little more research and I found it. You need to jumper the two black wires after seperating the relay plug. It works.... just a word of caution to anyone who may be trying this, be sure to use a NEUTRAL start with a cold engine as the increased engine speed with the choke on will cause the bike to move. After engine is warm though it works a treat.
