Yes, it is a typical Kawasaki problem, finicky actuators, it's the same type actuator for the engine brake. (I suppose you could switch them maybe to see) I had my 4x4 actuator replaced once, then it stopped working again, took it in, 3 hours later($150.00) they put a jumper wire in, said there was some sort of short that they couldn't find.

If you take it apart it there might be crud in it, try that first, then the wiring, Good luck. Actuators are $300.00CAD.

You do know that to lock-up in 4x4 you have to be moving up to 7mph. It won't go into 4x4 while sitting still. When you see a rough area coming up then slow down, hit the 4x4 button, you will hear it lock in, the clunking sound is Norm while locking in 4x4 or unlocking back into 4x2.
It will NOT lock-into 4x4 in reverse.
If you are doing this, then keep the frt gear oil fresh and changed more often. I haven't had any problems at all with the 4x4 or brake controller.
Check and clean the Fuses, even with the covered fuse holder that the BF750 has, I still find dirt in the fuses.

I don't know if they changed it for '06 or what but my friend's new '06 Brute 750 can go into 4x4 while in reverse. It did it for me on several occasions.
