10 hour service 03 kfx400
#1
I've hardly ridden my quad since I got it and am running close to 10 hours. my local shop told me that it involves more than just an oil change. It requires a valve adjustment and retorque of other major nuts and bolts for about $250 for labor only. I wanted to change the oil and filter myself but he warned me that its not as easy as a car. Anyone have instructions on how to correctly change it? Im new to the sport so I dont know what to expect when maintaining my quad.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

IM sure you can do all your services your self. Change the oil, lube, and make sure everything is ok. I never got my valves adjusted untill i was at a year or so. I would find somone else to check your valves.

yeh, I think that is a big rip-off. I took mine in at 13 hrs, and it was only 60 bucks , but he said the valves didnt need adjusted until 1 year. they changed oil and filter, front end and rear end lubes, air filter. really you could do it yourself, but the dealer acts like it's a big deal to let them do the first service, I guess because they can document it for warrantie issues. Id call around if you have any other dealers close by.

What's hard about changing oil? Drain oil change filter. Re-fill oil. If you have someone who has a set of feeler gauges then I owuld borrow them and do the valve check by yourself. In my group of riding buddies we got 4 Z400's and we all did our service by ourselves and the valves were fine. Its not hard.

are you a catholic alter boy? dont let them take advantage of you!!! find a speed shop or anybody can do your valves. get a manual!!!! dealers charge like $40-50 in labor a hour. and they always find something new!!!!

Guys,
I've gone to several shops and unfotunately, living in So. California gets expensive once you buy any thing that has wheels. I've done valves on my own cars when I once had the time. Is a manual really going to cover how to do the scheduled services? And will I need special tools? I know I wouldnt touch my ZX10 since that gets way to technical.

If the service manual for your quad is anything like the manuals I have for ours it will walk you thru the process step by step. Get the manual and read thru it, you will find most repairs on your quad are not that difficult to do at home.
Any time I buy a new piece of machinery be it for the farm or just toys I always get the service manual for it. In case of trouble, and it always occures according to Murphy's law, having a service manual is a must.
