the belt will not cause a machine not to start. Your belt wearing sensor might be tripped and it will make it so you don't have much power or 4x4 but you can still start it. You might be flooding it. try the primer (if you have 1) and use the pull start. If it starts and your top speed is like 10m/h and you no 4x4 your sensor is tripped. You can also bypass the sensor which is a small square box on the top of your clutch cover. The belt probably requires shims for adjustment you can do this if you have the proper tools.

Do you have an '02 or '03? The '03 is the only Prairie that has the dumbass limp mode, the 02, or any of the Prairies built after '03 do not have this limp mode feature.
If you have an '02 oem belt, they were not good belts and kawi quit selling them. You can get a P700 belt (any of them) and you'll have a good belt to start out with.
All of the info to check deflection and replace the belt is on the nyroc forum under tech tips:

YOU'RE RIGHT, I DID FLOOD IT AND GUM UP THE PLUGS. REPLACED THEM AND ALL IS GOOD. I EVEN TOOK OFF DRIVE BELT COVER TO INSPECT POSSIBLE DAMAGE AND SAW NOTHING. BELT TOTALLY LOOKED NEW. THE FAIL SAFE TOGGLE SWITCH WAS NOT TRIPPED (STILL IN ON POSITION).
CALLED A LOCAL DEALER AND HE TOLD ME THAT THESE MACHINES ARE MADE TO NOTIFY MAINTENANCE CHECKS EVERY 90 OR 100 HOURS? COULD THIS BE WHY THE BELT LIGHT ON THE DISPLAY IS ON?? IF SO COULD I JUST PULL SOME FUSES SO THAT THIS SO CALLED INTERNAL TIMER IS RESET?
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR REPLIES. MUCH APPRECIATED.

there is a reset procedure for the newer kawis. Is yours still in limp mode? I think I'm wrong but shouldn't the sensor be in an off position. I tell by looking not by what it says. Take a small pair of aligator claps and bypass the sensor and see what happens. Also look and measure the belt deflection. If the light is on solid it should be the belt sensor.

The belt sensors go at a certain time, even if the belt is in good condition. Its just to remind you to inspect your belt.
Heres what you do:
On the right side of the ATV (Above the belt housing and behind the air box panel), there should be a 2-in-1 connector for the belt sensor wiring. First, there will be either black and white OR black and grey wires connected on the 2-in-1 connector. Now, reverse the wiring so the black wire is where the other one was, and same with the other wire. Now start up the ATV with the reverse connections in tact for at least 17 seconds. Now you put the connections back the way they were and start up the ATV. It should be fixed now.
