Probably the 400.
I personally hated riding my 400 in the woods. It handled great and all, until I got into the deep rutted stuff, then the lack of ground clearance sucked.
Tight trails on the 700 are a problem and steep down hill stretches, but other than those two items, I felt that the 700 was the superior trail quad. I don't know how anyone can say it is tippy. Problems keeping the front end down, yes but tippy no.

I olove my 700 but I am selling it probably And getting a Zilla I love everything about the KFX 700 but its weight its so heavy that I just cant take it anymore I am 5'11 and 205lb but I ride in the snow and I am constantly geting my 700 stuck which is fine but having to lift up the rear end to move it out of its ruts over and over again got old plus I am getting more into hill climbs and theres nothing better than a zilla for that I say unless the weight is an issue keep the 700 mod it and have a blast i have taken mine places people said it was impossible for me to get to. If i could I would have both and probably will some day. Now after all of this I will say that I am probably buying a 400 for my loaner bike if I can find the right deal.
