Status of Parting out the Killer Bee & a comparison to last year's project
#1
Its been 2 and 1/2 months since I began parting out the Killer Bee. I find it interesting that this P650 parting out project is going a little differently than the P650 I parted out just 1 year ago...so I thought I'd post here with a brief update of how its going.
***UPDATE:
First off, I'm happy to report that I've netted $3,500 on the parts I've sold so far. My goal is to reach $4,500 to $5,000 to make it all worth the trouble of parting out my quad. Luckily, I still have TONS of Prairie parts to sell, so I think I'm on track for reaching my goal (eventually).
***SIMILARITIES
As expected, there are many similarities between this parting out project and my last one. Here's a few key similarities that I've noticed so far...
1) I am still convinced that parting out a Prairie is like taking on a part-time job...its VERY time intensive (disassembly & clean-up of parts, taking pics, checking prices of new and used parts to determine my prices, writing ebay ads, answer questions daily from prospective buyers, packaging up parts and taking them to post office to ship them, etc.)
2) I still have to answer 10 or 15 questions for every 1 sale (or something like that)...I just remind myself that I'd much rather get 100 questions from prospective buyers than NONE! LOL
3) The same parts that were popular last year are still in high demand this year (e.g., the Motor, KEBC and 4wd Actuators, Wheels & Tires, etc.)
4) It took me approx. 5 months to part out 90% of my stuff last year and I think I'm on target for that pace this year.
***DIFFERENCES
I noticed some things are not going like last year's P650 parting out project including:
1) There are a few more people parting out Prairies now than 1 year ago (last year I felt like the ONLY GAME IN TOWN and that is not quite true this year...but I do think my parts are in better shape that 99% of the ones you see on ebay b/c the Killer Bee had such low miles on it)
2) My ebay sales made up a much bigger % of total sales last year as compared to this year...I find it surprising that while I have a more frequent presence on ebay this year, my ebay sales are lagging other types of sales so far this year (I also sell locally and on various atv forums).
3) Some items that sold LAST one year ago have sold FIRST this year (this is not a total shock b/c sales of used parts seem to be mostly about timing of when people break stuff).
4) I'm saving a TON of time this year by trying to ship most everything from the local Post Office which is on my way to work...its much more convenient than driving to the nearest UPS Ground Distribution Center located about 15 miles or so away from home (I found that the distribution center is MUCH cheaper than going to local shipping stores where they mark up the cost of UPS and Fed Ex).
Well, that is my update. Let me know if you have any suggestions or comments or if you need any parts.
Happy trails...
