Hey, all
Im getting ready to adjust my valves for the first time on my 06 kfx700 my Question is how do you guys Torque the locking nut and hold the adjuster at the same time ? do you guys torque the nut or just make sure its good and tight using a wrench and a screw driver

I bought these when I adjusted my Wolverine and they helped out a lot! Tappet tool set
I just bought a 2004 Twin Peaks/Prairie 700 with 600 miles on it, I forget how many hours. He had the valves adjusted at the time they recomended I think 100 miles. It is two years old and was wondering after the initial time of having them checked/adjusted how often they should be checked/adjusted. I do here like a tapping but sounds like it actually may be comming from the side where the belt/transmision is. He has a clutch kit in it if that means anything to make noise.
Does anyone have the process for the Prairie 700 since it is a V twin? I noticed under the seat were the valve clearance specs. I am sceptical to do it on this one, the Wolverine was easy.

Whether V-twin, parellel twin, single, the valve adjustment is all similar if not same on these metric quads.
For front cyl:
1). Set the crank to TF mark, which is the end of the compressiong stroke.
2). Open the valve inspection cap
3). Loosen the locknut with 10 mm wrench
4). Adjust the slotted screw to the spec.
5). Tighten the locknut while holding the slotted screw.
For real cyl:
1). Set the crank to TF mark.
Steps 2-5 are all same.
Get a genuine Kawi service manual which will be the most important investment you will ever make for your quad.

I just got done checking mine and they were all in spec except for one of the rear intake, I adjusted it to be equal to the one next to it. Thanks for the helpful info. The rear cyl. wasnt bad at all, took the plastics around the air filter off (two bolts) and battery (3 bolts) and it was all right there. The front one I had to removed the airbox (could they have put anything more bolts or hose attachments to the airbox?[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif[/img]) then they both were right there. The front exhaust port was the most difficult to get to.

In my experience, Kawi's V twin engine needs valve check/adjustment about every 50 hours of usage to prevent any top end damages like valve digging into the valve seat of the head and/or breaking the valve head from its stem. Also, properly adjusted valve will give you easier starting because the head can breathe better.

Yes, I did notice when engine is cold I have to start it with the choke all the way on and it does take it a little to warm up before it runs good. Once warmed up starts right up. Maybe it is more of a warm blooded animal, where my Yamaha Wolverine was more cold blooded, I barely had to use the choke on it.
Is that normal on these?
