SET TIMING ON BAYOU?
#1
hi,
i have a question. in the fall i had to replace my cam shaft. i finally got the cam shaft in and put together. did lost track of how i took it apart so to set the timing i simply made sure both valves were closed, the piston was all the way up and the point on the flywheel and point on that black box line up. hopefully seting it right when it fires. well i did all and try to fire her up and she cranked right up. i couln't eaxctly tell but it felt like when i was riding it around it lost some power from before i had to work on it. always it was running really good other than that. now down here (north carolina) it's getting pretty cold and i tried starting it and she would just crank over a couple times then backfire really loud, never running just bfiring every so often. one thing is that my sparkplug was messing up a little about 5 days before hand, i didn't feel like buying a new so just clean it and it ran fine til now when it backfires. so my question is can a sparkplug be the cause of this really loud backfire or is my timing off enough to do it in the cold? and last is there a way to time my 97 bayou 300 2x4?

I am not expert but I suspect it has more to do with carb adjustments. Perhaps the reason it ran better when you cleaned the plug was due to it getting dirty from mis-adjusted carb. The carb has an air adjustment screw located at the front of the carb and on the bottom. You might try adjusting it but start with screwing it fully in and backing off 2 1/8 turns.
I can't imagine worrying about saving $3 on a sparkplug on a $4000 atv. If in doubt, i can a plug if it has aged. For the money, it isn't worth wondering if this is the problem.

Snakeyes93, I believe I told you how to time the cam earlier (where the index and reference (witness) marks are located: "T" for the crank; about 11:00 o'clock for the camshaft sprocket); maybe I did not communicate effectively. I again REALLY suggest you buy a service manual.
Congratulations on your initiative to do your own work; keep it up! Best of luck on getting the Bayou running right.
