Default 220 bayou spark issues

I replaced motors in my bayou. The orginal motor had the 2 sets of 2 wires (4 total) coming out of the stator and the motor I put in had the 1 set of 3 wires.
I switched the stators on the motors so the electrical would be the same. When I check for spark, it only seems to spark right after I let go of the start button. There is no spark while I have the start button pushed in and the motor cranking. I have checked all grounds (I think) & made sure the battery was charged and I still can't figure it out. The thing is the motor I took out ran fine before I replaced but the shift shaft was broke off. Thats why it gets me to think I may have something hooked up wrong, but I can't see what it could be. Does anyone have any ideas that could help me?

Thanks

I am having the same problem with my 1988 bayou 220. I have replaced the ignitor, coil, pick-up, and stator and still have only one spark when I let off of the start button. Have you solved your problem?

Nope,
I have a new ignitor coming in, but I don't know if it is the problem or not.

up to 95 they had 4 wires at the stator. 96 and later had 3. Also, the old ones was actually a magneto and the new ones an alternator. I'm going to look at the diagram for a while and see if I can figure out what your problem is.

Mine is a 1988 and has a 4 wire stator. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I purchased a manual and feel sure all of the wires are connected right. I've even gone as far as replacing the wiring harness with one I pulled from a parts bike I have. The result has been the same no matter what i've done.

Thanks

How is your battery? Will it start by pulling the rope? Or by towing it around the yard?

Try swapping out the cdi unit, my 90 bayou 300 was sparking only when i released the starter button, i replaced the cdi off of another bayou and she sparks now when I push the starter button. Hope that helps.

I was affraid to mention the C word, but if I had to guess from looking at the wire diagrams, that would be my guess. Maybe try hooking it up to start in any gear. That gets rid of the "starter circuit relay" and maybe the cdi won't know you're trying to use the starter. Not a bad mod to do anyway,,,, I like it. Search for "start any gear 220 bayou" should pull up the thread with that mod.
