Bought a used 2002 Prairie 400. What all should be checked?

My father has been looking for an ATV for several years. He's in his 60s and still loves to hunt. He wanted a quad to help him get around the woods.
Anyway a guy he works with had a buddy that was selling his prairie. Original tires looked good. Rims only had one dent between the four. He said it was all adult driven and he mostly used it to poke around his farm. The guy actually bought it from his best friends family. His friend shot himself and the family needed the money. Shroulds only had minor scratches. All the stickers were there. Nothing broken.
Is there anything he should check besides the obvious? It's his first ATV and I really don't know much about them. We're either going to order a manual from Kawasaki or find one online (I'm not even sure if it's available for download at this point). Also I'm trying to find out if the '02 4x4 is full time or 2WD/4WD. There is a button above the kill switch that the guy said was the kill (not sure). It obviously didn't kill the engine, but when pushed I can't tell what it does. Did the '02 have selectable 4WD?
Thanks for any advice

Well sure. Only thing is the guy obviously didn't know much about it. It was in very good condition. Rode well. Nothing wrong with it that was obvious.
I'm just asking is there anything that is out of the ordinary, perhaps with this particular model or year we should be aware of? You take a risk buying anything, especially used.

I have a 97 prairie, the button your talking about above the kill switch should be a reverse power assist. Put your 02 in reverse and push the button, hit the gas and hang on. Make sure there is nothing behnd you. Ha Ha
