KFX 400: Is my transmission going out??
#1
Hey guys, I just bought a 2006 KFX 400 in real clean shape for $1800. I thought I was getting a great deal, but it sounds like the transmission is going out? It is extremely hard to find neutral, even with your hand. When it is in neutral, sometimes you hear metal clanging. Sometimes the neutral light won't come on, but it isn't in gear. And the kicker.... sometimes when you try to start out in 1st, it is like you are against a brick wall... like something is jammed. It almost feels like there is not a 2nd gear too. Is there a wide gap between 1st and 2nd on these bikes?
What could this be? Is this going to be labor intensive, or something you can fix without tearing the whole motor apart? Where could I get the parts to fix?
Thanks!!

None of that sounds normal at all.......
Suzuki did a nice job with that trans, it is generally butter smooth in operation all across the board. They shift smooth and the gear spacings are spot on perfect. So what you are saying is happening is certainly a problem.
What that problem might be is anyone's guess...... It is hard to diagnose a trans problem until you take it apart. It could be something simple from the shifter being bent, to something more serious like gears being sheared or a bent fork, it could be anything.......Most of those parts area aluminum so any single problem could lead to others.
Personally I would not ride it like that. I would start investigating the problem deeper. Start with the shift lever and work your way in.....
