Default New battery pre-charged?

Another battery question.

I read the directions to brother in law on how to properly setup/charge another new battery, before he does something like this again, http://forums.atvconnection.com/show...37#post2776937.

Anyway,
Even those directions say that simply letting battery stand for an hour after adding acid provides a charge. Doesn't say a single thing about putting it on a charger and actually fully charging it. Wouldn't all of you recommend charging it fully first?

I'd almost have to say that simply adding acid and running it, will drastically shorten the life of the battery?

Opinions (uh-oh), please?

Thanks

Charging always makes sense, but do not charge it when it's connected to the bike, else you'll fry he alternator.

Its a lead acid battery they love to be charged endlessly... but running it without charging it first wont hurt it either as your alternator will charge it while running it also. Its not like ni-cd or ni-mh or li-ion that should be charged prior to the first use.

The batteries that I get come dry with a container of acid. The directions said to fill with acid, let sit at least an hour, out of curiosity voltage then was 12.57. Then put on charger, less than 2 amps, I used my battery minder to bring up to full charge. That brings it up to 14 volts then drops off to 13.5.

keep in mind the lower you charge a battery for longer the better it will hold a charge and it won't fry your alternator if you charge the bike because a quad dont have one its called a magneto i would pre charge in on two amps for an hour or two

Some quads actually have alternators. I tend to bench charge all my batts at 11 amp because i usually deal with 100+ amp batterys, and a 2 amps it'd take a while.
