Default 2002 650cc (I think it was the first model year) reliable?

Hi. I am looking at a used 2002 650. I think this is the first model year for the 650. I was wondering if they are reliable and if it would be a smart purchase. I also am looking at a 2005 model also. The older model is cheaper and it has less than 3000km. It is in really good condition. The 2005 is in good condition also but is about $1500 more. Should I just get the newer model or would the 2002 be OK? Thanks in advance.

A 650 what? Polaris? Buick? Honda? Ford? Kawasaki? Suzuki? Toyota? Chevrolet?
What model?

There is not much difference between 2002 and 2005. The belt has improved a bit so you can easily upgrade that if needs to. I would get the 2002 for $1500 less.

Did you want to ask "what brand"?

My guess is:
Kawi - since this is Kawi forum.
Prairie 650 - since it was the only 650 quad from Kawi that year.

Yes it is the Prarie. So no real issues with the older machines? The machine has been used for hauling moose. How many kilometers before I would need a belt?

It's like asking, how fast can you spend $100?
The CVT belt on a quad can last only 1 km or 10,000 km. Actually you can burn the belt and shred it into pieces on your first ride if you try hard enough. Get a service manual and inspect/adjust or replace the belt if out of spec. The key to long life of the cvt belt is "proper usage, menaing no slippage".

Default 02 Prarie

Bought my 02 650 Prarie in July 01. No Problems. Did replace battery and got new tires . I suggest that if you going 12 miles per hour or less use low gear. Really saves the wear on the belt.

Good testimonial about the 650 and CVT belt.
Also, whenever you are towing anything, use LO gear. I even use LO gear whenever I am in 4WD mode and/or going up steep hill.

The CVT Belt lifespan is exactly proportional to your IQ level.
