now was the smoke WHITE or BLUE? WHITE would indicate a blown headgasket causing coolant to burn in the combustion chamber, BLUE smoke would indicate oil being burnt in the combustion chamber, possibily caused by bad piston rings or bad valve seals. did the smoking just randomly start? and oil in the airbox sounds like the breather from the valve cover(if it runs into the airbox) is spitting oil out and its soaking the air filter and causing the engine to burn oil. but like stated before that would cause BLUE somke.

Answers are in your own words.
The 700 is known to push up crankcase oil into the air box and it goes right into the carbs' intake when running at high rpm. You said you were racing your buddy?
Once the valve seats on the head get hammered on due to tight valve clearance (damage already done), the valves would tighten up again. Time for a valve job on the head. You said the valves got tight again after adjusting them only 3 weeks ago?
