Kawi, Bayou 300, KLF 300 Starting issues
#1
I have a Kawasaki Bayou KLF 300. I turn it on and push the start button. it turns over and over and over ect....wont start for a long time. I try choking it lightly , medium, full. All kinds of different ways. THEN... I push the start button for just a second and it fires up. Random when it decides to start up. After it starts it fires right up every time until it gets cold or sits over night.

I'm not sure if this is related but my KVF-400 Prairie does something similar. If it doesn't start in about 3 turnovers, it's not going to start. Let off the start button and then press it again, it'll start right up. I just assumed it was a characteristic of the type of ignition system it has. I've seen some cars that do the same thing. I don't think it's random so much as the ignition will only try to fire so many times. If it isn't getting enough fuel in those first few turnovers, the spark just stops while cranking.
If your Bayou is being stubborn on a regular basis, you can try what I do in cold weather and prime it first... Pull the rope starter twice with the key off and the choke all the way out. Then turn the key on and hit the starter button. Mine always starts right up that way.

Thanks for the responses. I will try cranking that way. I have never tested the spark first off. The last two days I have pulled the choke all the way as far as it will go and it cranked.Strange. I did put some injector cleaner in the fuel. This might have opened up the jets so it gets enough to start more easily. I will test it again this morning when I go up to feed the horses.
I have tried short bursts on the starter to no avail. Mixed with different choke settings. I will keep in touch as to what i find.

This morning it started up after only a few spins.
On your random Spark. Try twisting the end of the spark plug wire where it snaps onto the plug. Mine came loose a little so I twisted it to the right and it seemed to snug up. Hope this helps.

Have you tried adjusting the valves? That's how mine was acting when I first bought it until I checked the valves and they were too tight. I've had to adjust the valves a couple times on mine in the short time I've driven it. Apparently these are known for valves tightening up.
