Do you have a repair/service manual?
If you intend to work on your machine by yourself, that would be the BEST investment you would ever make.
Meanwhile, find a neutral switch (usually on the tranasmisstion area somewhere). There will be 2 wires, one for the neurtal and another for reverse.
Gound the LighteGreen wire manually - meaning run a seperate wire from frame or battery(-) to that wire. With the key on, the N light should turn on. And make sure the gear is ACTUALLY in neutral. Now see if you get a spark.

If you manually ground the Light Green wire and the Neutral light still didn't come on (regardless whether engine strats or not), you have another electrical problem.
As you know, just like any other light bulb, it should light up with just simple (+) and (-) connection to the bulb. If it doesn't, then either battery or your source of the ground is the issue. Before continuing to work on your starting issue, you should investigate why the light would not come on when you directly ground the N switch.
