On an four stroke ATV, what I do is, first, you remove the magneto wheel cover and the timing chain cover, take the spark plug out, and with a flash light, put the the piston at tdc on the compression stroke by turning the magneto wheel. Then loosen your chain tensioner, and the bolt on the timing chain just so the gear will slide off on to the bolt to turn. Now with the piston at tdc, turn the mark on the timing gear to line up with the timeing mark on the frame of the engine. Slide the gear back on the cam, (make sure you turn the key pattern to line up) Tighten up the bolt, and replace the covers and you should be good to go.
