bayou stalls and overheats
#1
Hi I was at a 4 wheeler ride recently and there was a very wet mud hole (more water than mud) well any way I hit it at a moderate speed and I stalled it started right back up and I drove out , so figuring it was a fluke I hit it again and it stalled again it happened about 4 times I am wondering if it had anything to do with my headlights being on or could it be something else.
Ok now part 2 is anyones bayou prone to overheating anytime i run it at slow speeds for a while on warm days it runs fine, but when i go to open it up it lacks power it'll run about 3/4 speed but any faster it cuts out until it cools down a little also the 4 wheeler ride I was on it also started overheating when I had a some but not alot of mud on my cooling fins but again its only above 3/4 speed thanks for any info I hope Ididnt ramble too much

it seems to me that even a light coat of mud insulates the motor enough to cause moderate overheating, also alot of slow riding causes it too, i constantly have this problem, as for the quad stalling out, i am not sure, maybe one of the key electrcial components got wet for a short period of time, but other than that i have no clue.

Are you sure your wheeler isn't suffering from some kind of carburetor problem, like running too lean or something. Does it smoke at all? Headlights don't figure into the problem you're having, I don't believe. It's either electrical or gas related. Since it fired back up after you hit the water, I wouldn't think it was electrical. Was there any water in the airbox?

Hey there, i have the same problem with my 99 bayou 300 4x4 that u are describing, its kinda weird because sometimes i can come screaming into a water/mud hole, make a big splash and it never stalled, but other times, it will spudder and die. the only think i can think of the problem being is that the splashing water gets into the breather which is located up my the top of the handle bars, and the water gets sucked into the engine..... I have only had my bayou over heat once, and ive been through some extreme conditions, going through mud going slow while its 30degrees (celceus) out and it never over heat.... the only time it did was when i went for a big muddy ride on the transmittion line (full of mud and hills) it was me and my cousin on my bayou, im 205lbs and he is 220lbs, and about 3/4 of the way to our destionation, and 1.5-2 hours of deep mud and hills and water, it over heated. it could barly pull us, had no power at all, i was just crawling along.... it i put it down to 1st gear and flattened it, it would just crawl. so i made it to where my buddies were and let it sit for 10mins and it was fine.

We used to have a Bayou 300 that would die after some, but not all water crossings. After MUCH cussing and searching, it turns out we had a small crack in the insulation in the ignition 'brain'. It also turns out that since the housing was aluminum (for cooling, I think) and it was above the engine, the hotter the engine was, the bigger the crack in the insulation. We fought that thing for a year until the box gave out completely. When we took it out and looked carefully, we saw a hairline crack in the insulation (kind of a sort of epoxy type stuff) where it met the aluminum housing.
Not to scare you, but the first symptom of it going out was a weak spark that made it sound like it was sputtering at high throttle openings when it was hot.

i have a 2000 bayou 300 4x4, and i have the same problem with it stalling in mud and water. I take off at a good speed and hit a hole, which is filled with mud and water, as soon as i hit it, i kills. I don't know whats the problem, but i'd like to fix it. It starts right back up, just don't know.
I have no trouble with it overheating and i ride very often, and hard. But now i'm worried reading all of the info above, i'm going to have to watch that. I'll keep track of this, and learn.
