Bayou 300 Chugs at High Speeds
#1
I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I have a 2001 Bayou 300 4X4. I runs fine at low to medium speeds. When I try to run at full speed it chugs. Like it has bad gas or something. I took it in and $170 later it does the same thing. They said a float needle sticking, so they replaced the float valve. Does anyone have any ideas? Is this normal? Thanks.

It sounds like you're running way rich. When the throttle is open from 2/3 to full open, the main jet carb circuit is used. The needle jet carb circuit is used from about 1/3 to 2/3 throttle. You could decrease your main jet size in SMALL incrementts to see if the problem goes away. If you lean it out too much, it will overheat and worse case the engine will seize.
Talk to your mechanic and see what he recommends and if he'll do it. You should know what you're doing when re-jetting. There are a number of articles that talk about it on the web. Spend some time and search for them and read them.
