Just wondering what type of aftermarket tires and what size would you put on a 650 if you owned one? Would you have to put it in low to get through deep mud or climb steep hills with 27 inch tires ?

I have stocks and 27&quot; 589s on my 650.

My 589s are on steel (very heavy ~12lbs each) rims. I can usually make it though most mudholes in high range, but I usually put it in low to save on belt wear. I think that if I would have aluminum rims, it would be much easier to spin them.

There already was the shootout between the grizz and the p650 in two diff magazines. The 650 won, but it was real close. I don't think the quest will be much of a contender, but the sp700 might.

 

92LT, What widths of tires you put on your 650? I want to get some 28&quot; mudzillas (only size) and do not know if I will have clearance problems like:

-will they rub when I bottom the shocks (I am not that fat, but I sometimes jump etc.)
-will they rub when turning sharp
-will a 12&quot; wide rear tire hit the gas tank shield.

Who know these things? Do I have to learn by trial and error?

 

I'm picking up my 650 tomorrow with GBC Dirt Devils 27x10x12 and 27x12x12. They mount right on the stock rims and don't require spacers or anything and they don't rub the gas tank. They look absolutely wicked.

Nice pics Kevin. I take it those are 27&quot; tires. What is the ground clearance, on pavement, at the outer edge of the floorboard halfway between the two fenders?

Yes, 27 inch tires.

My 650 now measures 12.5 inches from the floor to the bottom of the floorboards. I'm running 4.5 pounds of air in the front and 4 in the rear.

These are 6-ply and it makes for a pretty rough ride compared to the original tires. Kick it up to about 20 mph and the ride smooths out considerably. On the hard pack they ride pretty smoothly. It tickles my feet to ride slowly on pavement.

They have pretty beefy lugs but the machine can spin the tires with ease. Steering is very easy with these tires but there is a very small amount of instability at speed on pavement. I never felt like they were going to change my direction, but they didn't feel like they were locked on the road.

The rocks I was able to crawl over was simply amazing. I only hit the skid plates on the bottom or swing-arm about 4 times. Even with these tires, mud protection from the fenders was very good.
I'm pretty happy with them so far, I just wish they soaked up more of the little bumps. Hopefully they will soften with age.
