I just picked up my 650 Friday eve. I got out today to put it to the test. I was doing some mild climbing just to get used to the quad, running in 2wd, 4wd, high, low and locking the front in. I was very pleased with the 650s performance. The only thing I didnt like was coming back down the climbs. I was trying each of the scenarios coming back down just to feel the characteristics of the engine braking. In 4wd low range on a few of the trips back down the hills the engine brake would completely let loose and I would get a horrible ratcheting sound. I was pretty much freewheeling. It also did it once in 4wd high. Did my dealer miss something or am I missing something? Im happy I didnt put it to the test on some larger hills or I would have been eating some of the mountain side. What had happened made to rotten of a noise to have been good and I have never experienced the engine brake basically disengaging. A little help please.

Is the noise like a rattle as if something is loose? Mine makes this noise if I climb a hill or turn to the right. The dealer has no idea what it is but did agree he heard it. It's coming from the right side around the ebc control. It does it in 4wd and 2wd. Does this sound the noise you're hearing?

The best way I could describe the sound is as if a chain is slipping around a worn sprocket. I'm not up to speed with the way the Kawi engine brake works. The sound is not what I would think a belt would make slipping. I will be in touch with my dealer first thing Monday morn. I'm confident that they will take care of this problem. I only have expeirence with the Polaris EBS but what happened yesterday cant be right.

I to had the same problem and ropadopa is right adust the shift linkage and it work fine. I find the speed at which you aproche the hill is the speed the bike will maintain going down the hill. For eg. if you are in 4wh low and crawling down to start with, the bike will also crawl down the slop and almost want to stall the bike it works so well. If you are 10mph going into the slope the bike will also maintain the same speed going down at least with my 650 anyway. The EBS braking system doesn't seem to work as well in 4Hi but I think neither does the other bikes. Also the EBS does not work in 2wh drive and thats in your operating manual at least in mine.

Happy riding

the sound you are hearing is coming from the rear bracks, rip down a trail and mash the foot brake pedal and you will hear your noise! Its the clulch disc rachecting togather slow down the wheeler try not to lock up the rear end, thats what I hear from other 650 owners.

Cool in the woods...I feel pretty certain that its not the rear brake. If I did the descent 25 times probably 20 times was under 7mph. I did not get the same results at any point during the day when I wasnt coming down the hills. The shift linkage would seem to make sense. I appreciate all of the help.

My problem was the shift linkage and the belt was also in need of adjustment. My dealer took care of my problem in less than an afternoon. I dont notice any difference in take off but my engine brake works correctly now. Thanks for the input, maybe the dealer would have determined the problem just as quickly but I think my suggesting the shift linkage as the problem started him looking there first.
