No. The gears are not synchromesh, they line up just right and you can't move the shifter, but you rock the quad back and forth a touch and you can shift. Many people tell me most automatic quads with the High, Low Reverse do that. Some worse than others.

If you had a bayou, foreman, big bear, or suzuki before this 650, it had a different transmission design that did not do this. I think pretty much all full automatics do it.

If you just give the throttle the teeniest little bit of throttle, it will move the gears ever so slightly and it will shift instead of having to rock it. I use my left hand to shift, right hand to give a touch of gas in case the gears line up and it won't shift. Works pretty well.

If you turn the idle speed up just a touch, it may alleviate it. It may also make the gears grind, so use your own smarts to decide. Please do not sue me if it causes premature tranny wear.

I noticed on my 650 that once it was broken in, it engaged smoother. Only occasionally do I have to have to rock it back and forth the engage it.

Yoo kawi guys,
Us polaris guys have this problem also. It's easily fixed by adjusting the shifter linkage.Ours has a lock nut on the shifter linkage rods, loosen those and adjust the rod.It takes about 5mins

I have not had this happen to me at all. I did have a linkage problem which was corrected but even then I could shift through the gears without any hesitation or resistance. From time to time going into H I will get a very quick gear ratchet so maybe Nyrocs theory is correct that idle adjustment will cure your problem. I wouldnt worry about premature tranny wear if the idle theory is correct the split second it takes for the engagement noise I hear is not severe in the least. I would compare it to the way a motocross bike will engage into first if your sitting on the line reving the engine and then put it into first (while the clutcth is pulled in of course).
