I've got a Kawasaki 650 Prairie and have had 4WD problems. Had it in the shop a couple of times. Last time the 4WD actuator was replaced. Still doesn't go into 4WD until riding approximately 20 feet. Occasionally the display alternates between 2WD and 4WD which I understand is an indication the 4WD isn't working. Works great when it does go into 4WD though. Your comments...

I posted the same problem at the same time you did. Mine does the same thing. I plan on taking it to the dealer as soon as I can but they're 1 1/2 hours away and they don't really have a place to test it out. Hopefully someone can figure out if this is normal or not.

I think its normal for the machine to machine to have to roll some for the 4x4 to engage, I'm not sure how far you have to go.It said something about it in the owner's manual. Are you guy's stopping to shift from 2 to 4?

I stop to shift into 4X4 and I still have the problem.

Mine is a little sticky acting, but it goes in within 4 or 5 feet.I find it goes in eaier if you stab the throttle a little bit' just enoughh to spin the rear tires a hair.

I along with some other 650 owners noticed that if you are stuck in mud and then switch to 4x4, the quad will continuously shift in and out of 4x4. You have to switch to 4x4 and then ride a good 10 to 20 ft on solid ground before it will actually stay in the 4x4 mode.

I realize that the 4WD will not go into gear immediately. My truck works very similar. The shop told me that when the indicator flashes from 2WD back and forth to 4WD, the 4WD isn't working. I was riding in Georgia recently crossing a shallow river and noticed the indicator flashing as described. I'm not sure but water may have an adverse effect on the 4WD operation. My Luck! I know of others with 650s that don't have the 4WD problems like I'm having. I guess I can only hope it doesn't let me down when I need it the most. I'll continue to monitor this forum in search of a 'fix'. Thanks for the replies...

Hmmm, maybe I don't want the 650. Sounds like everyone is having problems.
