I was reading another post on another web site and one guy was saying he yanked the twist throttle off and I guess put a thumb on. Can I do this to my 84 tecate? I like the twist put I've never rode one before and its kind of weird. Is there any kind of modifications I have to do to put a thumb throttle? Would it be better than the twist or not?

the twist helps in the sharp right hand turns because with the thimb you must wrap your hand around the bars and hold the throttle with your middle and pointer fingers you also have a better grip on the bar with the twist

The 650 would be "trigger" happy with a twist throttle, LOL!!

I have to go for an operation on my right thumb (Trigger Thumb) this weeks. I guess its from the stupid thumb throttle on my 650. I wish there was an after market twist throttle that I can install. Now I cant ride for 3 to 4 weeks.
any suggestions

I've always wondered who came up with the thumb throttle thing.Gawd I hate them!Anyways you will need at least one new grip since the sleeve that twists is slightly larger than the handlebars. There are 2 types of twist throttle's I have found. One has a 1/4 turn and the other has a 1/2 turn. The 1/4 is better for racing and the 1/2 turn in better for trail riding. You will probly need a new cable too.

Once you get used to a twist you will be mad at yourself for not putting one on sooner.

Do you have any kind of link that you can post for these twist throttle. I have to try to replace the thumb on my 650 prairie.
Like I posted before I got what they call Trigger Thumb has to be from the thumb throttle . This happen when you strain the thumb the legaments get swollen and cant move thought the tendon. So now I have 6 stitches in my hand . However I still rode today but installed the thumb Saver thing that they sell seems to help somewhat .I wish I had installed few months ago well worth the $20.00 for it .
But twist throttle would be worth whatever it cost.
I wait your reply

I hate the twist throttle. They are cheaply made, frequently break (The plastic barrel where the end of the throttle goes in) and generally are unreliable. One flip in sand and you basically have to get a new one. Going back to thumb ASAP.

As far as a link no.I just mosey'd into my local atv shop and bought a twist throttle and new grips.I had to get a cable made for my mojave. It cost about $50.00 for the whole thing.I forgot to mention that the paint on the handle bars is real thick,it needs to be removed where the twist goes.

I had Terry cable make me a cable(I live 10 min from them). They used my old cable as a guide. You would probly have to send them your cable and possibly your thumb throttle to use as a guide also. There # is (760)244-9351 or (760)244-3139.

It would probly be best if you had them supply the throttle also(less chance of it not fitting correctly).Or you could send the stuff to me and I'll take it to em for ya.Lemme know.

Btw:I'm not affiliated with Terry cable other than being a customer.
