~~Mojave valve adjustment~~

The smoking probably has nothing to do with the valves. The reasons for adjusting the valves are this, if they are too loose they may cause a 'slap' or rattle to develop and won't open as much as allowed/designed-leading to decreased performance. If the are too tight they may not close all the way-that can cause burning of the valves, backfiring, low/poor compression, and decreased overall performance. On some motors a happy medium is reached where the valve seats wear at about the same rate as the valve train components wear allowing for long intervals between needed adjustments.
