I have an oil leak that covers about a 2 square inch area on my motor. It is on the left side on the front up high right by the spark plug, front exhaust, and head. My oil level stays up so it's not a bad leak, just enough to attract dirt. I was thinking that maybe this oil was driping down from my airbox because I've had a tendancy to over oil the element but the whole point of the air box is to be sealed so it shouldn't leak anything. Has anyone else had this problem. Also my belt is starting to slip. Are these things covered by warranty?

 

Well, it could be from the filter. The air box has a one way drain on the bottom to let water out but not in. If it is coming from the filter, this is how it would get there.

 

Don't have any oil leaks, but my belt is also starting to slip when I first take off. It squacks no matter what gear you are in, H, L, or R. It doesn't do it all the time, which leads me to believe that it either needs to be cleaned, or it is out of deflection. I ordered a whole pile of shims from my dealer so that I will be covered no matter what size I need. They were only $5 a piece. Gonna check it out next weekend so I will have lots of time to inspect all the parts and build the tools I need to pull the clutch apart. I don't know whether the belt will be covered under warranty or not, but with the amount of confidence I have in my local dealer, I would rather check it out myself and make sure it is done right. Ask some riders in your area about your local Kawi dealer and see what they say. There are some dealerships out there that actually have decent mechanics.

 

It appears to me that we are going to have to get use to belt slippage and a short belt life. Kawasaki does not warrant belts or any other part that wears. I replaced my original belt at about 700 miles and had to have deflection reset at about 1200 miles. It is now beginning to slip at about 1500 miles. Sure would like to know how many miles you have on your 650.

 

Geebee, mine began squaking around 550 miles, just a little when in the most dust.

Now, at 750 miles, I took a shim out and it is better, and I can probably get a few more miles out of it.

There was only one shim to take out, and it is still not within correct deflection spec. I will get a new belt. When that wears out, by then Gates will be making longer lasting belts for us.

 

Nyroc, thanks for the info, but sure hopes gates gets it done soon as the belt does not last long.

 

You guys are doing better than me. I've got 518kms on mine and it is starting to squak. Hope Gates builds a belt soon.

 

I sure hope that all you guys who are having belt problems are writting letters to Kawasaki complaining about the short belt life. Maybe if enough of us would complain, Kawasaki might decide they need to fix the problem.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif[/img]

 

I had a cut in one of the orings used to seal the value covers replaced under warranty.

I had the exact oil leak that you are having. Just enough to attract dust. It was the valve cover on the front cylinder. They fixed it under warranty. Get ready for the clunk in the transmission, down hill ratcheting, and the belt chirp next. This thing is fun but its not built with the quality that my Honda 450s and 200sx had.
