650 Tecate Rumor
#1
Heard a rumor from a very reliable source that the Kawi 650 v-twin sport quad may not be that far off...now the twist...rumor has it coming out as an automatic tranny and not manual...if that is the case what is everyones take on it...would you like or not...that power plant would still make it a hauler exspecially if they built a well-balance from and suspension around it

THAT WOULD SUCK!! I think everyone would like to know what the Big Twin would feel like with a 5-speed Manual. I for one would be very disapointed in Kawasaki for not putting forth the R&D to make such a Combination.
I Have more fun on my DS, Playing with its LOW end torque, then I do screaming down the striats. And I like the IMMEDIATE response of a Manual. I want Kawasaki to go after the DS,and the Raptor, NOT the Scrambler market. Haveing said that, They'll probably sell more if they stay with the Automatic, But the won't sell it to me.

Are you sure? This doesn't sound very sporty to me. 1 to many cylinders = too much weight. Automatic = yuck. How are you suposed to feather the clutch out of a corner to beat the next guy and milk all the available power?
Sport Quad = 1 cylinder (2 or 4 stroke), long travel or at least good suspension, light as possible and manual tranny.
For you Banshee owners; I think the Banshee is ok but would be better as a single big bore.

first of all, if they're gonna call it a Tecate, it should be a 2 stroke. And we know that's not happening so they should call it a Mojave or come up with a new name. Notice: Suzuki called theirs a QuadSPORT and not a QuadRACER.
As far as the tranny goes, that's silly to give it an auto. That's not sporty...gimme a break. Besides, they should put out this rumored 400 pseudo-tecate before they talk about a 650...unless they unveil them at the same time. Count on Kawi to irritate sport riders. They've had prairies and bayous on the brain too long now. They're lack of innovation or improvement w/ the mojave is the proof of that. Shame on Team Green for ignoring the sport quad market this long anyway. They're NO HELP at all with my Tecate 4. But they don't seem to miss a beat with the KX line though...
a little biased I'd say...

This is actually an old rumor, but anyhow, my take is that if nothing else this thing will be fast as heck. The Prairie already will beat a 400 EX in a drag race. If they make a chasis that is even 100lbs lighter it will be really quick. If they knock off 150 lbs, well you get the point. I agree with whoever said that the 650 V-Twin is not a hot choice for a sport quad. It is just too big and heavy. Hey, Polaris sold a lot of scramblers, so there is a market for it, and if Kawaie does this, they will undoubtably have a better machine than the scrambler. Another thing, the one picture that was on here a while back, and made it's way to ATV Action too, that was called the Tecate 650 looked to have a shaft drive rear end like the Prairie. Nobody agreed with me on it, but it sure as heck wasn't a sprocket. It may not have even been a Kawasaki! LOL!

I was looking at the yammy catalog, & not a slight, or anything, but the auto clutch models were lighter than the CVT's, also the 400's CVT were within 5 lbs of the 660, & 650 prarie..(do they weld extra weight to them ?) I think that you could make a sporty v twin..my wife's 650 bike has a rev limit of 7500 rpm, but you would need to make it chain drive, & manual trans (with a for real clutch) it would be a blast..cut out some of the plastic fairing for the mud to increase cooling, put 22" tires on it, & point it in the right direction when you get on it..you could probally do a 2WD version & put it on a serious diet & shave 120 lbs off it.. then you'd have something..but put a hotter cam in it, & an ignitor that would let you turn up to 8K or so..it would have a fantastic mid-top end..the assumption is that a v twin is a agricultural motor, meaning high torque, low rpm, for the pushrod models that only turn 5K at best, I'd go along with it..but for the OHC models, especially liquid cooled, the bikes are a small displacement, higher reving motor
