Nyroc Masterblaster is right about the way to pound your rim. Like he says heat the infected area with an acetylene torch just with the gas on and use the carbon enriched flame. You can use a rose bud to heat gently but keep the flame away from the surface, aluminum does't change colors when it gets soft so be careful. By carbonizing the surface it softens the material and will mold for you but you will have to reheat repeatedly. Also using a temp stick that you can pick up from the welding store for a couple of bucks, get one for 500 degrees F. When you touch it to the heated material and it melts you have reached the desired range and you can begin your restoration attempts. By using the heat and the carbonized flame the material shouldn't crack and you will get your desired response. If I were close I would come and show you but I think you have a good grasp on the prcedure. Mend a little more before you exact your frustrations on a helpless little rim. Good luck.
