ATTN: DROWN PRAIRIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was out riding in the Hudson River just south of Albany, NY on Sunday. I got out a little too far, the intake sucked a little water and I couldn't keep the RPM's high enough to keep water from flowing in the exhaust. She died... I hopped off and a couple friends came out into the river to help me pull her back to shore. The motor was locked due to water in the cycliders. We took the plugs out and turned it over a few times and you wouldn't belive the ammount of water that those cyclinder's hold. Well, we put the plugs back in and got it running. My friends went to get a truck and trailer, I nursed it back to the road to be picked up. While on my way, it began burning oil, real bad, lots of smoke. I had no power, and lots of not so nice noises. We got it home, I changed the oil a couple times, letting it get hot before draining it. After 2 changes, it stopped smoking. I put new plugs in it and changed all the fluids, it runs perfect. I'm not sure why it was burning oil but it's not now.
PS- it runs great, but the clutch cover desperatly needs a drain, I will put one in this weekend. The cover was full almost to the top with water.

Nope, the belt didn't slip a bit. I have the EPI black spring in the driven clutch, I put it in the day before. I have since been back to the place where this happened and been in the river agian and again with no such problems. I guess I just got some water where it doesn't belong.
The smoking has completly gone away and it runs great. This could be the best quad ever invented, I love this machine!!

I have a theory:
Smoke was due to too high oil level in the crankcase, which caused oil to go into the airbox.
The high oil level was caused by water going into crankcase a lot sooner than it goes down intake (breather is lowest).

So then I most likely got water in the crankcase breather not the intake? I was being very careful about not getting water in the intake for fear that it would stall and I would not get out. Where is the crankcase breather?

You probably got water in the intake to kill the engine, but also got in in crankcase to make the oil pump out of the breather.
The breather is the 3/4" diameter hose on the right rear of the airbox. Water in airbox almost always goes into crankcase. I would gues that it would be ok to use crappy oil to flush the water out with, multiple changes if neccessary. Put the right stuff in and change the filter for the final oil change.

I did the same thing except I did not even try to run mine , took it home , pulled the spark plugs out , drained the oil and put diesel in engine , opened the drains on the carbs , turned ot over for a few minutes , then out oil in and turned it over a little , then changed the oil and filter and put the plugs back in , and it cranked and has ran perfect every since , it is a very bad Idea to crank one with water in the oil.
