packardbell15, Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 is an excellent oil. You can pick it up at Wal-Mart, or AutoZone.

Packardbell,
I run synthetic in my 650 because if you happen to put it under water it will come clean easier. I have been using Castrol Syntech but have recently changed to Penzzoil 5W30. The lighter weight helps to cool the engine better. I also use High Lifter additive in my oil. 4 oz. per change. It will make the engine run cooler in the summer. Good luck!!!!!!!!

There are so many filters to choose from. STP SMO-017 is what I get.

See this motorcycle filter page. Print and take it to the parts store. These will pretty much all fit the 650. They don't all fit all quads though, length problems or thread depth problems (the 660 has thread depth issues with some filters).

You might be better off using mobil MX4T than V-twin, since the MX4T is formulated for water cooled, and the V-Twin is formulated for air cooled. Oil doesn't care about engine configuration (V, inline etc). Oil does care about other stuff like temperature, and clearances. Synth pumps better in the cold anyway so even 20w50 V-Twin surely is better than using 10w40 Dino oil in the winter.

Amsoil is great, I just can't get it as conveniently.

Howdy,
I have found out that any filter that will fit a Mazda Miata with the 1.8 engine will work on the 650. I use Frams from Walmart. I have used them for a year with no problems. Have a goodun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
