Helmet Safety

I had a really bad quad wreck and my helmet's pretty banged up, but still intact. I hit hard enough to go unconcious. It's a good helmet and i dont wanna shell out more money for a new one. I wonder if it's still ok.

" really bad quad wreck " Replace it.... it's cheap form of life insurance isn't it... the outer looks don't count. Mine is all scratched from branches and I drop mine on occassion, it I think it can take that. Also it is recommended to buy an new helmet after 4 years.

Even though you can not see any cracks doesn't mean that it is still good the foam in the helmet it self might be do to it absorbing the impact it may be crushed and not work as well the next time you would need it. Like said before it is cheap insurance!

It's really too bad that there are so many people out there that don't believe in wearing helmets. I didn't at first, but that was because after shelling out the cash for the 650 I didn't have the $$ to spend on accessories. I considered a helmet an accessory then, but after I rolled the 650 on its side twice and got thrown off REAL hard once and got the wind knocked out of me...it became an obvious reality that it is more than an accessory.
Two guys that I ride with wouldn't ride with helmets either, this past weekend while riding together one of them rolled his 650 (completely upsidedown w/ bent racks, broken plastic and bent handlebars)into the woods as he went off the trail at 20 mph and the other collided with his 9 year old daughter coming around a corner and went over the handlebars, tumbling into the woods getting pretty banged up. After taking Tylenol for the past 3 days since for the constant headaches and aching bones, they have both decided it's time for a melon protector.
People need to realize that A) It is the easiest protection for a rider, B)It keeps your head warm on cold rides and protects from sticks/branches and rocks getting thrown up by other quads, and C) you look like a REAL rider that knows what he/she is doing.

After any good crash, you probably should replace the helmet. the foam on the inside is designed to crush to absorb the impact and slow your head down. if you got knocked unconscious, then the foam got crushed. Next time, the foam won't crush, it will be your head. Replace the helmet. And get the best one you can get, you only got one head!
