Anyone else wonering why they came up with a completely different design after just one year?

My dealer said it feels like the 03 has more low end power.

Did anybody else notice dirt in their airbox with the stock filter? I don't think the 2002 design seals very well. I hate it. I grease the edges of my K&N, and now nothing gets past it, but it sure is a filthy mess to clean.

I do know that the airbox is the same part# in 2003 as 2002. The lid is different, and there is a bracket thingy inside that is screwed down. The velocity stacks are different. I want to upgrade just as soon as K&N makes filter for it.

Keep us updated if you upgrade it to the 2003 box. Let us know the price of the conversion too. Thanks nyroc

I looked into the up grade but I though the box was different. It has screw holes in the bottom to screw the new style filter mounting bracket to. You can't go by part numbers on this one if you print both assembally diagrams out you will notice the lids, the air filter frames, air filter etc all have the same part #. And the original questons answer is because it has more surface area to flow mor air than the 02 version of the filter.

Montess, you are right about it being diffferent. I was on drugs when I looked that up the first time.

The air box is a different part number. It does however look like a few minor mods would make the inner bracket work with it.

the airboxes are 11011-1643 and 11011-1660. Different part numbers. Lids are 11011-1659 and 11011-1641

Hey, if I was going to do it thinking that I did not need a new airbox, I would have found out and either modified it or bought a new airbox. Still waiting for aftermarket air cleaners to be available.

I just had my airbox off to put on the Diamnond G snorkel. It looks like to me that someone with the machine skills of Nyroc could find an oval KnN and fabricate a top to it, then run bolts up through the thing. Essentially you would be making your own homemade 03 box with an existing KnN filter or even the 03 Kawi filter. Just a thought

Ok, Jlpier, I'm gonna walk to the parts store and take a look at the catalog, but I am a little doubting that I will find something that I feel is worth making me not wait for the 03 K&N.

I still think you would need the basics. You could drill the bottom of your exixting box and seal it wtih silicon but you would still need the frame and lid and stacks. You probably could find a regular foam filter at eh parts store but they are usually single density unlike the double density ones that we are running. Good luck let us know how you far I priced the entire set up the other daycomplete air box the dealer said it would be about $140.

I just got back, the parts store wasn't helpful at all. I enjoyed the walk around the neighborhood.

Actually, www.knfilters.com has a huge selection of universal fit filters. One night when I'm not busy I am gonna take measurements and see what I think.
