OK I have a question, what color is your used 424? Mine is coming out a grey color, has all three times I've changed it. I thought this was normal then I read a post that said grey 424 was a bad thing. Is it normal or do I have a major problem?

[cross fingers] I'm hoping it is normal and it was a comment made by someone who doesn't have a clue about a P650's wet brake, but wanted to put their two cents in a thread. [/cross fingers]

Is that brake material causing the color?

Best I can figure it is brake material changing the color to grey. I figure this is normal, I can't see how a brake could not operate without "dusting".

Grey is normal! As you just stated , the brake cannot function without wear. The wear shows up in the diff oil as grey matter. Same thing us old guys see every time we wash our hair.

OK, now I'm confused. I have two opinions on opposite sides of the spectrum. On this board most of you say its normal for 424 to be grey, but on High Lifter they say it should look new when you change it ore else its milked.

Hound, believe whoever you'd like I guess, but the fact is the first 2 times I changed mine it was grey. Brake wear is going to leave residue in the oil and it does change the color. If I pulled the fill plug and a half quart of liquid ran out I'd be concerned. Where do the guys @ High Lifter think this brake residue goes?

Until recently it hadn't rained here in months. Two rear diff changes done before any moisture hit and both times it was dark grey. It is brake material. This and the amount of heat the brake generates is a good reson to change it about three times more often than Kawi recommends.
Ever put your hand on the rear diff after a hard run?
