I haven't ridden the polaris, but whenever I get on my p650, I get a grin that doesn't come off until the ATV is back on the trailer. And, I have the Dunlops still--I can only imagine how good it is going to be (I keep looking for rocks, nails etc. that could puncture them, so I can rationalize a switch to my wife).

rty, think about this way. If you get the sportsman, how are you going to feel the first time a 650 blows by you? How are you going to feel as stab at the throttle, looking for more power, choking on his dust, as the 650 disappears into the dusttrail. Now, think how you would feel if you were driving the 650.

Owned a 2000 Sportsman 500.... biggest piece of crap ever made! The thing ate 3 belts before the dealer decided to try something else. (brand new clutch... $400 w/ labor, luckily on EXTENDED warranty)
The thing lacked power and really wasn't any fun to ride besides that.
This year the P650 was added to the stable.... VERY BIG STEP UP!!!! The fit and finish is impecable and the loads of power just makes you wanna smile every time you look at it.
Current mods include black spring, K&N air filter, and dynojet jetting..... this thing screams

In all both ATV's are in different worlds the polaris is a 500 and the Prairie is a 650....Big difference (150cc exact) and I've read alot of good about the prairie and little complaints. My cousin has the 500 h o and ounce wet the best slips and he has to put it in nuetral and punch it to get the belt better again. I guess theres only 2 things you can do.......1 Search all the fourms on the machines and get all the info you can. 2 Test them out...you'll get the best idea by riding them both and comparing the two.
Like everybody says its fun to ride whatever you by

I have a 2002 p650 and my neighbor has a 2002 sp500 h.o.
Here is my pro/con list after riding both machines:
sp500 pros vs. p650
ground clearance
cushy ride
MUCH better tires
gas mileage
lifetime belt warranty
p650 pros vs. sp500
dual lever brakes
looks (matter of opinion)
sound of engine (sp500 sounds like a farm tractor)
MUCH better gauges with fuel gauge
sealed rear brake
manual locking front diff.
big V-twin power
weight
Subjective:
solid rear vs independent, both have pros and cons (I prefer the solid)
Power - p650 has more, and it shows, but the sp500 is a torque monster, and can keep up in the trails. Drag races are a different story, p650 walks away. Both machines seem to have similar top ends (within 2-3 mph)
If I wanted a strict mud machine or a rock crawler, I would consider the sp500, but over all, I like the p650 MUCH better.
