I was just wandering what shim size has worked the best for the most of you in adjusting the belt defection after installing the black spring. I have only got 143 miles on it, and have not checked the belt deflection ,but from what I have read I'm sure it is more than likely will be lose when I pull the cover off and check it.

Some of us have been running tight, no shims at all (tight=really grabby). Others use one thin one, 0.6mm.

Some people probably use different shim thicknesses than that.

This might not help you any but....

I did my first belt adjustment this past weekend and when i took mine apart,I had two shims. One was thick{about the thickness of an average washer} and one was very thin{about 1/4 thickness of an average washer}. I removed the thick one and left the thin one in. When I put the belt back on,it was almost perfectly on the tight end of spec, so I left it that way.

The shims didnt have any markings on them so I dont know there actual size.

For what its worth..
I now have an ever so slight squeek at idle, but not enough to really bother me.

THanks for the info guys , I don't know if mine came with the 1.4 shim or the 2 0.6 shims, thats why I went and orderd extra shims before I started to tare it down. I think I'm leaning more toward the 0.6, if I knew it had the 2 0.6 shims I would go ahead and put the black spring in, but I hate getting started on something and not having everything I need to finish the job. Got the black spring from EPI in 3 days going to take over a week to get the extra shims from my local dealer, something I thought they would keep in stock.

I just got the black epi spring in the mail today. I preordered the shims ahead so hopefully I'll have everything I need to get the job done.

Mudholebull, if you get yourself a service manual, there is a formula in there that will help you get your deflection right. I used it and my deflection was right on the money. There are four different sizes of shims. They are 1.4mm, 1mm, 0.8mm and 0.6mm. I bought all four when it was time to set the deflection. They cost me around $5 Canadian a piece. I had 1.25 inches of delection on my belt with a 1.4mm shim installed when I checked it. After using the formula in the service manual, I figured that I should have the 0.6 mm shim in it. I put it in and Bingo!!
