4WD not engaging, found the fix!!!
#31
Hey, thanks for following up. Unfortunately I don't think I have found anything. I have taken the front plastic off and traced all the wiring, everything looked fine. All the connectors are good. The speed sensor looks fine, etc....I have changed all of the fuses, just in case, but I have not had a chance to take it off the trailer yet and test it to see if I fixed anything by doing that. I don't imagine so, but going to take it riding this weekend, so maybe luck will be on my side.
I need to find a good dealer in the Denver area that I can take it to, anyone have any ideas? I think I have exausted my resources. I think it is the controller or the actuator, but I don't really want to buy $500 worth of parts to find out. I am trying to find a good dealer that would have an 02 Prairie, then they could change out the controller and see if that is it, better than buying all the parts.

I can't see a dealer having a problem with that. Once they find the problem they will be able to sell you the parts, right?
Even if you knew someone else with the 650 that you could swap parts from.
Anyway, good luck and let us know how you make out and what you find.

You mentioned ignition switch. Mine(and others) acts weird sometimes, if you don't firmly turn it to the "ON" position. Wonder if yours went bad. Got a friend with a P-650? Swap 'em.................

That is the whole bummer I have! No one that I have found around Colorado with a P650! Everyone out here is big into IRS, and think that you gotta have it. Polaris and Honda are the top sellers out here, along with sport quads. Anyway, I will keep looking, but as the snow starts to melt, I need to get it into the shop, or figure it out, so we can hit the high altitude! If anyone has insight on Denver area dealers, let me know.

I have had the same problem with mine ,and it was the speed sensor located on the right side of the bike just behind the belt cover,my 4 wheel would not engage but the speed was fine,so i went to the dealer and he had a spare one that i tried ,i pulled it of and sure enough thats what it was ,but becarfull when you pull it out, unplug it then take the 2 samll bolts out ,you will loose some oil but thats normal,I bet on the speed sensor

I had to replace my speed sensor also. I just rolled the bike over to the left and braced it there. This made it easier to get at and keeps the oil away from the sensor as you change it. It's an easy swap, 5 min. job.

Altakawi, was the speedometer still working fine even though the speed sensor had failed? My speedo works fine, so I had "assumed" that the sensor was fine, am I wrong. Man it would be good to hear something posotive about this, I am truly frustrated!!!

Yes the speedometer worked fine just the 4 wheel would net engage,i think i paid $89 canadian, see if your dealer has a spare so you could test it.

Thanks! That is actually really good news for me. I will see if they have one I can test with. By the way, did you have any flashing lights on the Electronic guages, like flashing 2WD/ 4WD? OR were your symptoms the same as mine, just staying in 2WD and would not engage to 4WD?

Try lifting the bike and engaging it and spin each tire by hand one at a time. I never went through the hole thread here but is your 4wD switch going all the way down? does you 4wd indicator switch back and fourth from 2 to 4 sometimes? Did you try engaging it with the Diffi lock on? I heard people haveing problems when they did that, loosen your diff cable and try it (I don't know if it's true).
