I installed my black spring today--a few questions and pointers
#1
Well, I finally got a day off and worked on my p650. I love the fact that the work that has been done, has all been optional (no problems with the quad at all). I used Nyrocs site and my service manual and installed my black spring, and took out my only shim (this was the first time into the conversion system, and my belt deflection was way off). I only have 75 miles on the thing, and the deflection was at 34 mm. I only had one shim installed, and it was the 1mm thickness. Since, I didn't have any other shim thicknesses on hand, I just took it out. After putting the spring in and reinstalling, my deflection was just a little too tight for spec, but I am going to leave it. It only squeals while idling. My questions are:
1. how many miles on average have you guys been riding before the idle squeal goes away? (I know that many of you have posted that this has happen after adjusting belt tension).
2. the quad feels like it is more responsive, is this my imagination? (I thought I was mainly doing this to increase belt life).
3. is this black spring going to affect my engine braking at all? (I have not gone down any hills yet)
One more thing, I tried using a 2 inch plastc pvc cap to compress the spring. It worked fine for removing the yellow spring, but it was too flimsy to compress the black spring. I even tried making a little groove all the way around it and wiring it to keep the cap from spreading and slipping off of the spring cover. Even that didn't work. I ended up inventing something from a trailering plug and a couple of bolts. It worked great. For those of you who haven't done it yet, I would recommend the metal cap that nyroc shows.

here is some answers to a couple of your questions...
1. Cant answer this one as it was not a problem when we installed my black spring
2. Mine feels more responsive as well (actually today is the first day i am taking it out since installing...been riding on the street and just around the house testing out my recent installs)...I was told that it does help a bit with responsiveness at low to mid. But like you i mainly got it for belt life.
3. Different theories on break in procedures "break it in like your going to ride it" and the "take it easy for the first so many miles". Pending on which philosophy you believe. Now i am no mechanic...but i do believe the spring has the bike maintain higher rpms in the shifting process. But if you go with the theory no more then half throttle it really doesnt effect I wouldnt think...then again read back to my disclaimer that I am no mechanic.
I do know that the guy that helped me was a snow mobile mechanic...and when he seen the difference in the springs he told me " WOW, you are gonna love this thing". That made me feel good

pcpacker, I had to adjust my belt after 75 miles also . My deflection was 31-32mm. I had 2 spacers and only removed 1. Both were the same thickness at .6mm (0.024). After removing my deflection dropped to 24mm and I also had the chirp when idleing in a gear. Its gone now but I cant remember what the milage was when it quit. After looking at the odometer trip records a good guess woud be 90 miles. My P650 not only felt more responsive, it was. The black spring had no effect on engine brakeing at all.
I used a plastic end cap that worked pretty good on the black spring. You just have to keep it centered up.

Minor chirping at idle, just means it is a little too tight, it will probably go away after a few hundred miles at the most, just remember when you come to a stop, to idle, shift it to neutral until it wears in enough to stop chirping, if you stay in gear and let it chirp for several minute's it may make a small flat spot on the belt, neutral when stopped no problems....
