Default any one want to guess what's wrong?

it's really cold and when I go to start my 650 it takes alot to turn it over... decompress etc... The problem: The starter will turn over for about 4 seconds and then it would release sort of like a frozen starter on a Polaris. You run this twice and the third time it will start. It doesn't really matter if the engine is hot or cold it just needs to sit for about ten minutes. It is also inconsistant. I'm thinking starter brushes. I have 700 hours on em.

I guess I have to ask, is the starter diengaging and then spinning or does it stop spinning all together? if its still spinning then I would say the starter bendix is worn out and won't hold againest engine load. if the starter is stoping then I would think its a brush or winding problem. hope this helps.

When you say release, what exactly do you mean? I've never had a polaris to have a frozen starter on... Is the starter just spinning without cranking the engine? If so, and this is a guess as I'm not to sure how the starter engages, but on my last bike the starter engaged the crankshaft using a small metal key, shaped like a half cicle that locked onto the shaft itself. My key broke in half and sometimes the starter would just spin but not crank the motor. This would go on until the broken key would catch and then move the crankshaft. Clear as mud isn't it? I can't think of how to explain it better unfortunately.

The starter spins by it's self for about 5-10 seconds after the starter disengages then it quits, is there an rpm limiter on the starter?

THere is a load sensor on the starter. If theres no load it shuts itself off. Sounds like a problem with your bendix. Could be just from the cold weather but then again its -20f here and mine works fine. You do have alot of miles though so you may need to rebuild the starter, if its possible on the P650.

I just hit the 700 hour today
I'm taking it in tommorrow for the boys to look at the starter. I would have to say my load sensor is working good.
