Spark Plug?
#1
Do diffrent spark plugs really make any diffrence in the way an engine will fire? Just wondering if a "split fire" or an "Iridium NGK" will make my 650 start any better. My plug is working fine now, just wondering if there is any diffrence at all in plugs.
Thanks for any info.!

I agree , there are lots of companys that would have you think they build spark plugs that are the best, but NGK's are the way to go if you know your stuff. the manufacturers design there ignitions around a givein plug, and they expect the best result from that plug. when I worked in the dealers fixing Chevys I always had people coming to me with after market plugs that made their cars run worse or not at all.

Thanks guys for the responses. I have a 2003 650 so I think they have fixed the choke cable by 03. It doesn't start all that easily in the cold morning so I was wondering if there was anything else that I could do to make it start up better. I was hoping that it would be as simple as putting in a higher performance plug. Guess not. Any other suggestion. I know a lot of you have adjusted your idol. Does that only make a diffence on the overall performance? Will it accually help on cold starts as well?
Thanks for the help!

You could try indexing the plugs. This entails making a mark on the porcelin that lines up with the open end of the plug gap. When you install the plugs make sure that the mark you made lines up with the intake from your carbs. This may require getting some copper spacers so that the plug can be properly torqued and still line up.

When I got my '03 p650 everyone said they were cold natured etc, so I thought it was normal to have to give it a little throttle along with the choke to get it to start when cold, and nurse the throttle a bit to get it going. No sir. Since I adjusted the idle higher, all i do is pull the choke and hit the button, no throttle. Starts nearly instantly, with just a few turns of the engine, and will idle without throttle input from that point on.
Take your idle adjuster which is the black dial on the right hand side of the engine, and increase it by turning it clockwise. Be sure that when you turn it that it's actually turning the screw on the carb, and the idle is increasing.

Elevation depending how extreme may play a part, but this isn't really rocket science.....just turn the thing clockwise while it's running until your idle noticeably increases and finds a steady place. If you have a tiny tach, its 1100rpm plus or minus 50. I dont think they come anywhere near that from the factory. Start it up cold, get it going, and turn the idle screw in till it runs on its own strongly with no throttle input. Best of luck, and quick cold starts =]
