New P650 question
#1
My buddy recently bought a 650, I rode it, then traded my Honda 450 in on one. My new one has a big gun exhaust, 26 in. ITP 589's, and a carb kit. My buddies has a big gun exhaust, and 28 in. tires. His is faster at take off and he steadily pulls away from me. My question is what can I do to get more top end speed? I have read some about the black spring, holes in air box, but I am new to the Kawasaki.

What's the chances of you are on an 02 and your buddy is on an 03. The 03 is faster than 02. There's a CDI box that's comming out soon but not soon enough The carb kit does nothing until you get more air, drill holes and DG racing Snorkel.

Diamond "G" Racing sells the snorkle. $50+shipping. The black spring is the best $25+shipping you could spend on that P-650. It'll make your belt last WAY longer!

I would suggest a Diamond g snorkel to complete your mods, it is better than drilling holes because it gives you cooler air. As a test, find an open spot and see how fast you can go, then take your top off of your air filter, and see if there is a difference in speed in the same distance as before. What is meant by carb kit?
With everything been equal, tire weight and identical mods, ect. ect. he will have more speed because of the difference in tires size, he will be traveling more distance in one rev.

BJones, your buddy is probably running different clutch springs. Did you install the pipe and retune it yourself, or did the dealer do it? There's been alot of 650's that had mods done but didn't work well due to being out of tune.

The black spring will not affect your top end but will give you better take off .
Also if you do let more air in with the snorkel you may have to rejet again. By carb kit I assume you mean the Dynojet kit. This particular kit is tricky in getting the right setup and requires tinkering. If you go to Nyrocs web page he has a lot of setups for different altitudes. Since I have rejetted I havent been able to reach my best stock top speed yet. Still waiting for good weather before trying again.
Good luck, Bob

Everything that was done to mine was done at the dealer before I picked it up. The dealer put on the pipe, replaced the front jet on the carb with the rear jet, then put a larger jet in the rear. I don't know how much tuning they did, but I believe mine would run faster stock. I am going to take it in for the first service. Should I have them put the stock jets back in the carb.

Its hard to say if the jetting is too rich right now. Try what shotgun recommended and remove the airbox cover and if you have a noticeable improvement you may jetted too rich. I'd say then to open up your air intake with a snorkel. Also check your sparkplug to see what color it is. A black plug is rich. Your needle jet may also need shimming. This one has the greatest affect on your low medium range performance. The main jets only affect your top end.
