winch maintenance?

I think the winch should be completely taken apart at least once/year. Yes its kind of a pain, but it really isnt complicated. I took mine apart after a "spring like" winter days ride. The rookie in front of me kept getting stuck with his brand new 3 wheel drive Suzuki Vinson. I'd come up behind him and try and give him a push. Meanwhile he was throwing mud all over creation , and especially all over my machine. With my front end up against his rear wheels, my winch was in the perfect spot to suck up all kinds of $hit. Of course I didnt realize just what had taken place until the next day when I tried to use my winch to re-spool the cable. It wouldnt budge. All of the mud and water inside of the winch had frozen overnight and locked her up. I took it apart and couldnt believe how dirty everything was. I took all of the gears out and greased them up. Put it together and everything is great now. Its the second time I've this to my winch. One allen wrench is all needed to dismantle my warn 2000.

Maybe we should unspool our keyboards once a year too..... I still havent taken my winch apart, I just left it since it was working as advertised. Now its getting to the point of really needing to come apart. Last time I used it I pulled a griz 660 from deep mudd and heard some noises that werent normal.

Probably wouldn't hurt if I tore mine down before even installing it, lubed it with some quality grease, and made it waterproof with either gasket-maker or silicone. (Warn 3.0)
..sounds like I've got a project for the weekend!
Now, if my damn winch MOUNT would come in............

I just finished cleaning my #2000 superwinch. Took it all apart and cleaned all the gears and cable spool. Gave everything a coating of grease and put it all back together. Big mistake! The damn thing hardly turned as the temp here is rather chilly and the grease was like tar. Ripped it all apart again and cleaned it all again and lubed it with chain lube (rust inhibitor) and put it all back together----again. Rips a$$ now!! Ordered a new 3/16 cable with a safety hook for $19 Canadian through Princess Auto and put that on too. The 3/16 cable barely fits on the drum as the drum was made for 5/32 cable but I managed to cram it all on there. Should be good to go for the summer. I was surprised how much crap was in there. You wouldn't think too much would get in there but it does.

I,m not sure if there is a way to waterproof a winch. Unless you never plan on using it. The gap on each side of the drum is where the mud and water enter. The drum rotating would chew up any silicon with the first rotation. Also if a good winter grade grease is used to lubricate the gears, it should not stiffen up too much. But most often we are not using winches in the dead of winter. The key is to not use too much grease, dirt will stick to grease. Not only that, too much grease around the freewheel **** will result in the freewheel/winch ****, not locking into position. It can keep slidding out of the desired position. My buddy made this mistake and had to go through the whole procss again to take the excess grease away from the selector.
