Default Installed black spring- lost power

I installed the black spring yesterday on my 03 650. I had 2 shims from the factory, I removed the thicker of the two. I lost power from takeoff to topend. The bike does not have the response it had at any speed. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

Take out the other shim and try it again.

Make sure you have the belt on the right way also as there is a right and a wrong way as far as rotational direction.

My buddy put the belt back on. If it is on backwards will this cause a power loss? This is my first Kawasaki, is the belt supposed to be snug on the primary and driven clutch? Mine seems to have way too much slack. I haven't measured the deflection, I thought the spring and removing a shim would help. Just by looking I would say I have at least 2 in. between the straight edge and the belt, but I havent' heard it slipping.

LINK Go here for lots of useful information and help as far as what exactly happens when the belt is on backwards I don't know but I do know there is a right and a wrong way. Also you shouldn't have that much slack, was the belt at the top of the driven clutch and not drawn down into it as this will give you more slack. As far as adjusting the belt deflection all the information you need is on nyrocs site which is the attached link. Good Luck, Seth

I actually put my belt on backwards for a couple of miles. It did seem to make a little bit of a difference, but not much. As far as a loss of power, I don't think that could be caused by the spring., something else must of happened. Even when I had my belt on the wrong way, it was still faster than without the spring, but maybe your belt wore differently than mine, and it did make a very noticeable difference.

I don't believe that it says on nyrocs site about what will happen if the belt is on backwards and I don't know what will happen either but I thought it maybe something to check. It is somewhere to start anyways. Good luck, seth

If you have 2 inches of deflection, something is desparately wrong. Either the secondary is assembled incorrectly or the belt isn't at the top of the sheaves when you checked it. Sometimes you have to spin the secondary around many times to make sure the belt is actually at the top of the sheaves. As far power loss, you didn't get any grease or oil contamination on the belt or sheave faces, did you?
